It's been one crazy year. It started off nice and kind. I was able to visit friends and make new ones. Saw two concerts and traveled to Houston for a mini break. But August you did began a journey that I will hope to not have to see for several years.
Now its time to reflect on what I can do to make 2019 a rebuilding year.
1. Be more selfish towards me. Spoil myself; but that does not mean to forget your bills and obligations.
2. Love your family more.
3. Eat healthy and do it constantly.
4. Be kind to everyone, be nice, be happy, just be.
5. Buy flowers for yourself and buy flowers for your friends.
So if one of these days you receive flowers at home or work with a note that says "Just Because you are you, love your friend." They might be from me.
6. Visit with friends.

Final Reflecton
It is almost over! I will be brutally honest here; I HATED THIS
CLASS! Now let me explain why I say
that; and what it is that I am referencing when I say that. First of all, I do not hate or dislike the
professor. Dr. Gross is great to work with and offers great advice. I do not hate my classmates. They offered great help in our partner
assignments and offered great comments in my blog posts. They were awesome.
I hated
the websites and apps that we had to use to create the assignments. I know that HATE is a strong word; but I
HATED them. More than anything I didn’t
like the way it made me feel. It made me
feel as if I was a complete idiot. I
couldn’t get it sometimes and I felt like I had a first grade mentality. More than anything I feel that I was over
analyzing myself and created a fear that I could not break free from. It literally took me a year to get through
this class.
I took this class for the first time during
the Fall semester of 2017. I got stumped
on the Info graphic assignment and after that I just stopped. I had the hardest time trying to figure that
assignment out that I just stopped.
Looking back at it; I felt that I was just emotionally overwhelmed that
semester that I should have just taken a break.
My mom was still recovering from multiple surgeries, where we almost
lost her. I had surgery on my foot in
September of that year and was recovering slowly and I was just not in the
right place emotionally and mentally. I
needed a break.
Taking this class over again was interesting
when I got to that assignment again. The
one that I failed at last year. I was
happy that I was able to turn several of the assignments early and gave me a three-week
head start on the info graphic assignment.
I struggled on it again but this time I just buckled down and did
it. I was not sure that I completed the
assignment correctly; but I had to do it, I had to commit myself to at least
try. I tell my students to never give
up; but to at least try it. So I did,
and it was not that bad. Funny thing
though; I had surgery again in September 28, 2018; that I am currently still
recovering but mentally I am better now.
Screencasts, instagram, YouTube,
animoto and QR codes were a breeze to complete compared to the previous one;
and I was glad that I was able to learn how to use some of these applications
that I can share with my kids.
Screencasts is a tool that I will use to be able to explain lessons to
students when I am out or to embed in a Google Classroom. Animoto is another tool that I will have my
students use in their upcoming projects to create short videos.
The Cartoon lesson is one that I
enjoyed the most and will be using more in my classes My students are using
them to create cartoons using their terms for economics. By creating the cartoons; I feel that my
students have a better understanding of the term in the way they use it in the
cartoon or comic.
Having knowledge of how these app
works I will be able to show my co-workers how to use them and be able to use
in their classrooms. When I become a librarian these tools will be helpful to show
others how to use.
So while I like my Professor, I
like my classmates and I like the majority of the topics in the class; I STILL
HATE INFO GRAPHICS!

Copy Right and Fair Use
This week's assignment was to partner up with someone taking this class and create a guide regarding Copy Right and Fair Use. I was fortunate enough to work with Elizabeth Ritter (Banda). We worked well together and were able to get things done by the day before Thanksgiving. She was an awesome partner.
But one thing I will say is this regarding finding a partner. Several people had sent emails to the class requesting someone to be there partner. I replied to two fellow classmates and neither of them replied back stating either "Yes, I'll be your partner". or "No, I am sorry I already found one." I just a simple reply would be nice to receive. It would have been an embarrassment to me if I thought we were partners when you had someone else. Now that being said; if I forgot to reply to someone to let them know I already had a partner I apologize.
Here are the two guides that we created. The information is there that you can create a poster for teachers to post somewhere in their classroom to help them and students remember the key points of Copyright and Fair Use.

Podcasts
Podcasts can be fun and frustrating. I have been doing these for the past two and a half years in various different courses that I have taken while trying to achieve my Masters in Library Science.
One of my fist podcast was for an assignment where I had to discuss about Ms. Nancy Pearl.
The following is the link where you can listen to it. It was an o.k. assignment.
https://ephscantu.podbean.com/e/nancy-pearl-podcast/
So what did you think? Horrible, right? I just hate the sound of my own voice.
ppods
Well for this assignment; we had to look at three different webapps regarding podcasts.
They were SoundCloud; Audioboo; and Podomatic. Unfortunately I could not find Audioboo so I chose Podbean which I have used before.
Accessing all three apps was not a problem at all. Soundcloud had the most podcasts to listen to. It was easy to access; but I feel for a classroom; this is the one that I would least want to use; because the students could easily be distracted and find several podcasts to listen to that have nothing to do with the assignment. So this one gets a grade of an A + but for student use I would give it a C-.
Podomatic was the one app that was a little hard to navigate at the beginning but once you got the hang of it; it was a piece of chocolate cake with ice cream. It was simple to set up and upload your own podcasts. As a grade I would give it a B; mainly because it was hard at first but then it was simple.
The last app I used was Podbean. This app was simple to set up and to upload. It is the one that has the least distractions compared to the other two. I found this one the easiest to upload my podcast and one that I can give my students the link to find easily.
But unfortunately my school blocks access to podcasts. So for a teacher to use it in a classroom would be hard; but they can upload to Google Classroom where the students can access it at home. It would be great for teachers to leave lessons when they are out for a long period of time or to leave for home bound students to access and know what they need to do in terms of assignments. I wish I would have thought of this sooner; because I could have created podcasts to leave lessons for my students.
My example that I created is the instructions for a lesson for my students in case they were absent for a long period of time or if I was out for an extended time period.
The example is the following:
https://EPHSCantu.podbean.com/e/lssl-5391-assignment/
For libraries; teachers can create the podcasts and submit the files to the library to store for when students might want to revisit lectures or instructions for lessons. This would be saved on a computer that can store these files and students can access it when needed. This would be beneficial for students that do not have access to a computer or other device to hear these podcasts.
Students and teachers can access numerous websites that have podcasts for them to use. There are several articles written that explore the different websites that are available. Some of these websites can be accessed by clicking on the following links:

Cartoons and Comics
Oh my goodness! This activity was fun, but it was hard and frustrating.
This week we had the assignment of creating cartoons using Toondoo, Pixton and MakeBeliefsComix.
First Cartoon.

The first one I tried was Toondoo. I was not a big fan, I did not fund a tutorial to help me out; but I learned by just trying out different pictures and clicking on different tools.
The cartoon I cam up with for this site; was pretty simple in my opinion; but I think it was ok for the first attempt. My students would find it easy to do; but not sure how much they would enjoy it I am afraid they would get frustrated. I am going to try this with my D.C. U.S. kids this week and see what they think about it.
The second cartoon can be found by clicking here:

I hopeful that you can access it. This is the cartoon from Pixton. I preferred the cartoons that were available in ToonDoo; but you are able to manage these cartoon images better. The kids would love this website better but I think teachers that are of a certain age (40+) would prefer ToonDoo better. We will see.
The Third Comic is:
This one was created with MakeBeliefsComix.com. And this was the best one of them all. It was easy to work with and had a various number of cartoons that you can use. The students will find this website easier to work with and I think will get a kick out of working with these cartoons.
This was a fun assignment; even though at first it was frustrating to use. I wish I would have been able to download Pixton; but was not willing to pay for it.
I can not wait to begin using these with my students.

Video and QR Codes in the Library
Hey Y'all
Hope you had a Great Halloween! For me it was o.k. Still have to use my Knee Walker to get around; and volunteering for the Fall Festival last week was not a great idea if I had to be getting around in that torture machine.
Anyway, this week's assignment was not as scary or frustrating as the past couple of weeks. Well, I just said that and watch me have a problem submitting this assignment or doing something completely wrong.
For the first part of the assignment; we were to look at at several You Tube Channels regarding how libraries use videos to promote themselves. The four Library Channels were The NHS Library, BBMS Media, Pikesville H.S. Library and The Unquiet Library. A couple of them had up to date information that we can use while others had very outdated and old videos.
We were suppose to answer the following questions for this assignment.
1. Which is the most helpful for students?
For The NHS Library, it was "How to Use EBSCO Host? because may students do not know how to access this tool and this was a great tutorial in helping students. You can access it here.
For the BBMS Media Channel the video that is most helpful is "How to Create a Noodle Tool Project" Having never used Noodle Tool; this was actually a video that I felt would be beneficial to most and not just students. This video can be accessed here.
For the Unquiet Library the most helpful link is "Finding CC Licensed Images in Advanced Flickr Search" because we need to make sure that we do not infringe on any copyrighted material. Click here to access the video.
For the Pikesville High School Library Channel the most helpful video would be "PHS Financial Aid Workshop 2013". This video is long, but it is one that is beneficial if you are seeking financial aid while attending college. Click here to access this video.
2. Which is the video that the students would like the best?
For the NHS Library I think the video that most would lie is "Norman Public Schools Celebrates Your Freedom to Read" because it showcases people reading different book titles that students might find interesting to read. You can access this video here.
For BBMS Media the video that would be most liked is the "General Hur has overdue books" mainly because it is a smart way to remind kids of their overdue books. Enjoy this video by clicking here.
For Unquiet Library. the most video that would be more liked would be the "New Arrivals, April 2012" video. Even though it is over 5 years old; students can still check out these titles within the library. To view this video, click here to open the video.
For the Pikesville High School Library Channel the most popular video would be "Pikesville High Shool FAFSA" because it is a great reminder to apply. Click here to access the video.
What would I do if my school blocks You Tube? This is a funny question; because our school district used to have You Tube Blocked. Teachers would at this time download the videos on to their own drives and then open them up on their computers at work. Unfortunately You Tube stopped letting people do this. So, our teachers, librarians and admin voiced their concern to school board and showed evidence of the benefits of using this tool. They listened and it has been free ever since.
How would I use a Your Tube Channel in my Library? I would create "How-To Videos", record meetings that occur within the school or library that students might find useful; create book trailers for new books that just arrived in the library; and other information videos that would benefit the students.
BOOKTRAILERS
I chose "Love from the Very Hungry Caterpillar" by Eric Carle as the book I would use to create a book trailer. The reason I chose this book, is because my niece was just reading this book to her 3 year old and that memory was the reason for my selection.
A synopsis regarding the book is "“You are the cherry on my cake; you make the sun shine brighter; you make my heart flutter.” Using a range of images from the World of Eric Carle, and featuring the Very Hungry Caterpillar, this special gift book gives all the reasons why someone special makes the world a better and brighter place. Perfect for that someone special any day of the year!" This synopsis is from Amazon.com
The first QR code will direct you to a video on how to use EBSCO and the second QR code will display a video reminding you to return late library books.
Well I hope I did this assignment correctly. Other wise I better get on the ball to find out what went wrong.

Screencast-OH MY!!!!!
We know have a new winner!
At first I hated infographics. I have a new #1 of the things I do not like. In the #1 position we have given the crown to creating INSTAGRAM STORIES! Now, I love instagram, because its a great way to keep in contact with friends. I love seeing their pictures and what they are up to. But for me; having to create a story; Dear Lord, Have Mercy that I did not through this laptop against the wall and yell out "You want a story? Here's your Story! Mild Mannered Teacher goes wacko creating a simple story! " It took me longer that I would have liked; but I hope I did well to complete the assignment. *****New Updated Note*** I didn't know that Instagram story deletes itself after 24 hours. So I went back and created the story again as if it were a regular post; and then re-did it somewhat again as a story***** That is why Instagram Stories are my new #1 for what I dislike!
Screencast-o-matic seemed easy to use but what took me long is for me to happy with the recording. I had to record myself at least 8 times before I finally said this is the one. I did have several pop up windows show up throughout the presentation but I was lucky that they were not inappropriate.
Of the three the one that I like the most was Screencast-o-matic. It was fairly easy to use and you are able to save a copy on your desktop. The students would probably prefer to use Instagram; because they are already used to it. The problem that I have in regards to using Instagram is that it is blocked at our school. If we are using the school's internet connection than this site is blocked.
All of the options are great to use for students; especially if they are creating a "how-to" video when creating a project online. For kids this would be a great way to show adults how to play some of the video games that they play online and what they need to do to be able to live past 30 seconds from the start of the game.

INFOGRAPHICS! YUK!
Infographics scare me! They are intimidating to create and drive me crazy! Had to get that off of my chest.
For this assignment I created free accounts in easely, piktochart and infogram. All three are great sites to help you in creating your infogram.
The first site that I looked at was that of easely While it had awesome templates to use; I had a hard time trying to navigate through this site. I noticed a tab that said "Getting Started" and underneath that tab there was a section that said "Crash Course in Infographics". I was jumping for joy because I found a way to be helped. When I clicked on that link it sent me to an e-book that was NEVER sent to my email. NEXT!
I then tried piktochart. At first I was like, do I have to pay to get the templates that I want to use? Well the answer was yes and no. There are plenty of great looking templates that you can use free of charge; but just like all the other sites you can upgrade your experience by paying a fee. I am broke so I went with the free stuff. I ended up choosing the first template that I found to test this site. The tool bar was easy to understand and I was able to add shapes, colors, fonts and was able to upload images from my computer on to this site. I LIKE THIS ONE!
The final site that I tried out was infogram. The templates that I found on this site were just as good as the ones in piktochart; but the tool bar was hard for me to decipher. While I was able to understand more or less how to use it; it was taking me too much time to decipher them. It reminded me of the tool bar I have to use when using Photo Shop. NO THANKS!
I ended up choosing piktochart. But what information was I going to use to create my chart. I went to the Pew Research Center website and found great articles that would be helpful with my assignment. The article that just popped into my mind was one dealing with cyber bullying. I used the data and information that was in the article to create my piktochart. Hope you enjoy.

The Piggy didn't get to go home.....
What we have now can be gone within an instant. Three weeks ago, I was so happy with my life. I was eating well, losing weight and was enjoying exercising. In terms of exercising, I loved to go walking at the lake or at the park by my house. Well, I must have overdone it. I ended up with a blister on the bottom of my left foot. It was actually on the side below the Pinky Toe, so I could not see it when I was checking my foot.
Well the blister popped and got infected. I was lucky enough to make an appointment with my Podiatrist and was seen two days later. She did not like the way it looked and was thinking about possibly admitting me to the Hospital. Instead, she gave me an antibiotic and a cream to use; and to schedule an appoint with my Peripheral Vascular Dr to check the circulation in my leg. I ended up having an angioplasty which showed that I had no circulation on the bottom of my feet.
Two weeks pass, and I go see Dr. Borchers for my follow-up; upon seeing it; she had me admitted to the Hospital. They ended up amputating my left Pinky Toe. IT was that badly infected. I am still in the hospital with a wound vac attached and we will see what will come of this. Hopefully, this will be fixed but unfortunately I see this as the beginning of more surgeries and such. I am grateful for my sister who has sacrificed more than anyone to be able to be here for me. But, I will finish my courses this year, I will graduate this December! I have gone through so much to not finish.
Thank you to those that have read this.

Facebook and Twitter
Today’s
blog is going to look at the role that both Facebook and Twitter can have in
regards to the library. I searched for “School Library” in Facebook and
looked at three pages.
I was able to look at Duncanville High School Library (Duncanville,
Texas), Esparza Elementary library page (San Antonio, Texas) and Tuloso-Midway
High School library page (Corpus Christi, Texas). The following are some
key observation points regarding the three pages.
For Duncanville High School library page; the first thing I noticed
was a pictograph regarding the use of the library during the 2017-2018 school
year. It showed that I like that they
showcasing the works of various authors. Some of the authors that were
highlighted were Patrick, Carman, Helen Frost, and Maureen Johnson. They
were advertising different events that were happening around the school
district such as Librarypalooza; and NerdvanaCon. The library page also
showed how students, staff and almost anyone could help out with the Hurricane
Harvey Relief effort by listing items that the library was able to solve 1660
technology issues in the library for students and staff; they held 277 events
in the library; and 2850 classes were able to visit the library during the last
school year. This information is vital
to show your school’s administration as to how the library is being utilized by
its school members in a time that some school are thinking about either closing
libraries or transferring them to smaller locations. What I did not find appealing was that there
were very few posts; but the posts that were shown were very interesting. The one that I found interesting was a
picture that showed library patrons reading books while using exercise bikes. I
message a friend that works at that school to get more information and maybe if
it is a positive one; I will see if my library would be interested in maybe
purchasing one for your library.
In regards to the Esparza Elementary Library page here are some
positive points and some suggestions. They also had a library report in
regards to how it was used last year; but the information was provided by their
school district. It lacked the eye-catching
graphics that were visible with Duncanville.
I did like that they posted at least once a week and the posts featured
students using the library. They also
showcased the collaborations that go one between the librarian and the
classroom teachers.
The last page that I looked at belonged to the Tuloso-Midway High
School Library. Working at a High School this was my favorite page, mainly
because there were numerous posts throughout the school year. The school runs on a year-round calendar so
there were several posts from this summer.
The one post that caught my eye was one that was asking for book
donations to be used in their new Starbooks Lounge. The Starbooks lounge was a place where
students can enjoy a hot cup of coffee while reading a book. This is something
that we tried at our school; but because of fear of students making a mess with
the coffee; it was shut down. This
segment was part of their Friday Fun Facts video segment that was produced by
the library staff.
Having a Facebook library page has its
pros and cons. The pros are that the
library can get more information out to students, the staff and the school community. They can promote school and library events; showcase
books; and promote literacy. The
drawback would be if the library did not post on at least a daily basis;
because people will stop visiting the page if no new informatiohttps://twitter.com/jimlerman/status/1036311049853644800n
is posted when they visit it. In regards
to my school’s library; having a Facebook page would be hard to pull off. Our school blocks Facebook; so, if a page was
to be set up, it would have to be done after working hours at location that was
not part of the school. This would be
hard to do because if the owner of the page was like me; I would forget to do
it because I had other things that I had to do around my house and with my
family.
In regards to twitter;
I had been following several new people including those that are tech savvy and
are able to share their thoughts and recommendations with others for the past
year. I had stopped visiting their pages this summer; so I was able to
visit them all again . One of the first
people that I read; was Kathy Schrock @kathyshcrock. Her twitter page
will first lead you to several of her webpages including www.kathyschrock.com. This web
page has a bunch of great information including her speaking engagements.
You are also able to access her blog that has great information regarding new
technology that I am able to share with my colleagues. In regards to her
tweets she had some great technology information as well as posts regarding school
tools to use (https://twitter.com/kathyschrock/status/1035881265126354945)
and cute one that help young kids learn about apps (https://twitter.com/kathyschrock/status/1031675119410790400
).
The next person that I visited was Linda
Brawn @Lbrawn2000. She describes herself
as a learning consultant, educator and teen advocate. I was not that impressed with her
tweets. The majority of her tweets were
re-tweets about YALSA; and other re-tweets from various different sites on the
net. Another person that I
was able to follow was David Warlick @dwarlick. I had like this page a
lot last year because he had posted several awesome articles. But know the majority of his tweets are the
posting of photographs and music videos.
One of the tweets that I found somewhat fascinating was where he informed
the public that the book that took him over 4 years to construct was now available
for purchase (https://twitter.com/dwarlick/status/1029355059900018688).
The Daring
Librarian @GwynethJones was the next person that I was able to view her
tweets. She is self described as a Future
Reading Mover, Shaker and Innovater. She
has the most up to date posts of the previous ones. One of her most recent posts was a link for a
librarian to download school ready cartoons that can be used in library as well
as in the classroom (https://twitter.com/GwynethJones/status/1036306717456388096
). Her posts also are relevant with
today’s libraries and teaching classrooms. One of the posts that caught my eye
was a link to help teachers set up blogs that will help them connect to their
students (https://twitter.com/GwynethJones/status/1036240948429246464).
The
last page that I was able to look at was one that belonged to Jim Lerman @jimlerman. He is known as an Architect of Ideas &
Implementations. He has great information
and links for librarians and teachers.
The one that was most valuable was a link that he shared regarding
different ways of using Google Docs, Slides & Forms for school projects (https://twitter.com/jimlerman/status/1036311049853644800
). This caught my attention because our
school recently attended a professional development on using google
classrooms.
As
the semester goes one, I will be following the posts of the people I just reviewed
along with others that share great posts regarding library studies.

Feed Readers and Blogs
What are free readers? A year ago, I thought this was a new job title to pay someone to read a book for you for free. It’s wasn’t. I actually had read the word wrong and it was a feed reader.
Today we will discuss what a Feed Reader is and which is the one
that decided to use to follow several blogs. Feed readers are apps where you can manage all
your blogs. You can read all of your
blogs by using the feed reader instead of going to each and every blog site
individually. I read the article The 12 best RSS Reader Apps to follow Your
Favorite Apps, Sites and Feeds by Vicky Cassidy. The article discussed the difference between
an online RSS service compared to that of a native RSS app. It mentioned several apps that would help me
in organizing my blogs into one location.
These included: gReader, Feeder, Reader, Panda, News Blur, Feed Wrangler
and Feedly among others. After reading
the descriptions and the costs of the apps, I decided to use Panda.
I went to the website and signed up for my free account and combined
my Twitter feeds to be sent to Panda.
That is where I knew what I was doing and not totally confused. I could not find a free tutorial on how this
app worked. I tried looking around and
clicking on different icons; but this was getting to difficult for me to
manage. So, I deleted my account and looked at my second choice; which was
Feedly. When I was opening up a new
account; I was reminded that an account already existed. I had forgotten that I had set up this
account. I opened up my existing account
and looked at the different sites that I was subscribed to. I decided to keep most of the ones that I had
subscribed to and added two new blogs to my list.
I decided to continue to follow the following blogs. They are:
a. AASL Blog http://knowledgequest.aasl.org/ posts
articles and editorials from the Journal of American Association of School
Librarians.
b. Library of
Congress http://blogs.loc.gov/loc posts
pictures, articles and other information from the Library of Congress website.
c. Mrs. Reader
Pants http://www.readerpants.net/ posts
articles, book reviews and other fun stuff from veteran librarian, Leigh
Collazo who is in her 14th year as a librarian in an international
school in China.
d. School Library
Journal http://www.slj.com/ posts
articles, editorials and other information from the School Library
Journal. It also provides a link to other blogs from librarians and
readers from around the world.
e. YALSA blog http://yalsa.ala.org/blog/ posts
blogs, articles, journals and other information from the Young Adult Library
Services Association webpage.
f. Mighty Little
Librarian http://www.mightylittlelibrarian.com posts
articles, book reviews and other information from Tiffany Whitehead, a
librarian from Baton Rouge, Louisiana
I added the following two blogs to my
feedly account. I will be updating this as we go along this semester.
g. American Librarians Magazine https://americanlibrariesmagazine.org/
posts articles and books reviews that are published in their print magazine.
h.
Library link of the Day http://www.tk421.net/librarylink/
which provides a daily link for keeping
up to date with the library profession.
For the most part I chose these blogs because
they were publishing at least once or more a week.

Here We Go Again!
One more year closer to retirement! Not really, but a boy can hope. I am starting my 17th year as a teacher at Eagle Pass High School; and I am so excited because this year I will be teaching a brand new course Its Dual Credit Texas Government. Oh Joy! But besides Tx Govt, I will also be teaching D/C U.S. History and Economics. Let's see how this will go.
Besides that, I am taking my last two classes to finish up my Library Science Degree. What will become after that; I do not know. There are many things to consider, before my next step.
But like I said; Here We Go Again! Love to you all.
